The Power of Music
I don’t often just write…….blog. But I am listening to some piano music…..Thad Fiscella….Beauty of Grace, and it has put me in a reflective mood, feeling like I want to express something to someone. Maybe I will write about my recent thoughts on the power of music…… because I was listening to some Christian vocals the other day, and I was conscious of how uplifting it was. I can remember being really low in my life and turning to rock/pop music at the time………and the hopelessness, sorrow, total despair that enveloped me. And now tonight this pretty piano music has made me want to write something, express something. The first thing I typed was “I Love God” in the title….. because the music took me there. Makes you wonder about the wisdom of “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” (Col. 3:16)……. and “speaking one to another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord..” (Eph.5:19).
Music is obviously powerful. I wonder if we are using it to empower us…..to protect us from the enemy. Some music can make us feel happy, peaceful, thankful, loving, intimate, uninhibited, energetic, focused, and abundantly joyful…….as opposed to music that can make us feel hard, angry, self-absorbed, irrational, and hopeless. Sounds like I am going to have to create another category of excellent things………..”good music.”
